Steven A. Hicks is an experienced advocate who handles primarily personal injury, insurance, premises liability, governmental immunity, employment discrimination, and wrongful discharge claims on appeal.  He also assists trial counsel litigating cases in the lower courts with issues likely to be appealed, including researching legal issues to determine how to evaluate or resolve claims.

Mr. Hicks obtained his bachelor of arts degree with distinction from the University of Michigan.  He graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1992.  He is admitted to practice in all state and federal courts in Michigan.  He is also licensed to practice law in Illinois.

Mr. Hicks specializes in representing injured persons before the state and federal appellate courts.  He has successfully appealed or argued cases on appeal and in some significant cases established new law in Michigan more favorable to injured persons.  See generally, Pierce v City of Lansing, 265 Mich 174 (2005); Robinson v City of Lansing, 282 Mich App 610 (2009), rev’d and rem’d, 486 Mich 1, (2010); McDanield v Hemker, 268 Mich App 269 (2006); Ferree v Pioneer State Mut Ins Co, 273 Mich App 47 (2007); and Morrison v Secura Ins, 286 Mich App 569 (2010), Majority Opinion; Dissenting Opinion.

Mr. Hicks has frequently served as appellate counsel to groups interested in addressing particular legal issues on appeal by filing amicus briefs on behalf of such groups, including the Michigan Association for Justice (MAJ) and the Coalition Protecting Auto No-Fault (CPAN).

Before specializing in appeals, Mr. Hicks had an active trial practice handling serious personal injury and no-fault insurance lawsuits with a reputable personal injury law firm in Lansing.  He also has represented businesses in commercial cases involving insurance and breach of contract claims.  During his career, he succeeded in obtaining verdicts at trial from both judges and juries in the state circuit courts and federal district courts in personal injury and commercial litigation cases.

Mr. Hicks also taught a no-fault insurance seminar for several years as an adjunct professor at the Michigan State University College of Law.  He often speaks at seminars for lawyers on topics such as personal injury, insurance, and appellate practice in Michigan.  He also testifies regularly before committees of the state legislature on proposed changes to existing law in his practice areas.

Mr. Hicks is an active member of the Michigan Association for Justice (MAJ), particularly its Legislative and Amicus Committees, where he serves as a co-chair monitoring appeals and legislation of interest to the MAJ, its membership, and injured or aggrieved persons generally.  In the past, he served on the MAJ Executive Board, the Council of the Negligence Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan. He is a member of the State Bar’s Negligence Law Section, Appellate Practice Section, and Insurance and Indemnity Law Section.  He also belongs to the Supreme Court Historical Society and the Supreme Court’s Advocates Guild, which is limited to attorneys who have argued calendar cases.
